The area of Knightsbridge dates back to the 11th century. Local legends maintain the name originated from two knights having a fatal duel on the bridge over the Westbourne River. In remembrance, it was dubbed Knightsbridge. In the 17th century, Charles Sloane Cadogan, 1st Earl Cadogan, granted a lease to architect Henry Holland to develop Hans Town, Sloane Street, and Sloane Square. Holland designed the street layout, built houses, and sold building rights on the development.
